On Saturday, the 25th of April 2009, UNCG students gathered outside the cafeteria fountain to listen, touch, view and taste the activities of Mary Foust Hall’s FoustStock festival. The event raised approximately $200, all of which went to the United Arts Council of Greensboro. With a name paying homage to one of the world’s revered music festivals, FoustStock kept the custom of long hours and was held from 1-10:00 p.m. The students of Warren Ashby Residential College (WARC), who are also the residents of Mary Foust, worked in preparation of FoustStock for weeks. WARC upper-class mentors and resident advisors organized this year’s traditional event. However, a key difference between this year’s FoustStock and previous others, is location.
FoustStock was formerly held on the side lawn of Mary Foust, but as this year’s festival was also a charity benefit, students wanted it to be more accessible to the whole university. Nine local bands played throughout the day, including Lunaglazer, Israel Darling and Space-O-Nots. Listening to the bands was naturally free of charge and other activities were available for a small donation. Pie-a-staff-or-faculty-member, handmade crafts, tie-dye and face painting were some of the activities that were offered. When asked of how FoustStock 2009 was received by other students, junior Megan Letchworth said, “We had a lot of students say that they wanted us to do it again next year, or that they wanted to be a part of it. It was great to see the amount of interest in the program.” FoustStock was sponsored by the Warren Ashby Residential College and the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
