Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When is the trip?
    The trip is scheduled to depart from Greensboro to Washington DC on Sunday March 8, 2009, and return to campus on Saturday March 14, 2009. Students will take the train from Greensboro to Union Station in Washington, DC. All travel in Washington will be either by Metro or by foot. Students will stay at the The Pilgrimage.
  2. What will the trip focus on?
    This trip will work with agencies in the Washington DC area that address hunger, homelessness, and HIV/AIDS in an urban setting. Projects include preparing and distributing meals in community kitchens and beautification projects.
  3. How much will this cost me?
    The trip costs $150 per participant. This cost will cover the travel arrangements to the specific location, around DC using the Metro, and back to UNCG at the conclusion of the week. In addition, all meals and lodging expenses will be covered. Participants are encouraged to bring additional spending money for a meal off site as a group and money for any souvenirs or activities that will be done on the participant’s free day. The total cost of the trip is actually broken down into 2 payments of $75. The payment deadlines are February 10 and February 27th. All payments to the Alternative Spring Break program are non-refundable.
  4. Are there any additional policies for attending this trip I should know about?
    The trips are all alcohol and drug free. Participants will be asked to sign an agreement and will be asked to leave the trip early if they are found in violation of this policy while on the trip. Participants will be asked to participate in nightly reflection activities, yet there will be a free day built into the trips' schedule. Specific information on the trip’s schedule will be disseminated to the participants during the meetings prior to the trip’s departure. All participants MUST be recognized by the University as either an employee or a student to be eligible for this opportunity If you have a disability that may affect your volunteer performance and are seeking accommodations, it is your responsibility to inform the Advisors of Alternative Spring Breaks.
  5. How can I apply to be a participant?
    Simple! You must first meet the eligible criteria listed below:

    1. Be a UNCG Student
    2. Be a UNCG Staff member
    3. Be a UNCG Faculty member

    Once you meet the criteria please complete the application. Decisions are made on a rolling basis and a waiting list will be created. In the past, we have been able to offer an opportunity to participate in the ASB program to those on the waiting list.

  6. How do I find out if I have been selected to participate? All applicants will be informed of their application status via email. Please make sure to provide a valid email address on your application.

  7. Are there any other dates I need to know?
    YES! Once selected to participate in the ASB program you will be required to attend 2 pre-trip meetings. These meetings are VITAL to the overall success of the trip. Dates for the meetings are as follows: February 10 and February 24th. All meetings will be held in the Ragsdale Conference Room at 9:00 PM. Failure to attend these meetings may result in losing the opportunity to participate in the trip, and forfeiture of all payments made.
