2nd Annual

The Office of Housing & Residence Life recently concluded it’s 2nd annual Best Dressed Room Contest with a dessert reception held on September 30, 2009 for all participants entering the contest.

The competition had participants decorating their rooms based on 5 judging criteria:  style, creativity, attention to detail, best use of space, and overall impact.  Winners at the hall level were determined by the Assistant Directors of Residence Life (Shakima Clency, Dan Calhoun, and Chris Gregory) and representatives from their respective areas.  First-place winners from the hall levels were then forwarded on to be judged by another set of judges (Mrs. Bethany King of Undergraduate Admissions, Mr. Kevin Scalf of University Relations, and Mr. Matt Moss of the Residence Hall Association) for determination of the campus winners of the Best Dressed Room title.

In only it’s 2nd year of existence, the program grew in participation from last year with the addition of almost 30 more rooms into the competition.  Housing & Residence Life looks forward to an even higher rate of participation for next year as it expands its award areas to include such categories as most creative, best dressed freshman room, best dressed upperclass room, most school spirited, best male and best female rooms.

Prizes for the contest included $150, $100, and $50 amounts split between entering roommates for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at the hall level.  Grand prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for the campus-wide best dressed room included $400, $250, and $100 gift certificates, split among entering roommates, to the UNCG Bookstore to be used to cover costs for Spring 2010 textbooks.

A total of 91 rooms (6 male, 85 female) entered the competition this year, up from last year when 64 rooms (4 male, 60 female) entered the competition.  Twenty-three of the 24 residence halls on campus were represented in the contest, with 36 rooms coming solely from first-year halls, 29 from upperclass halls, and 26 from halls with both first-year and upperclass residents.

Grand Prize Winners for Best Dressed Room on Campus went to:

First place campus-wide:       Rebecca Lowe & Chelsea Pope of Gray who described their room as: “Our main colors are pink, blue, and green.  We wanted a chic look, so we have black and white posters to go along with our zebra theme.  The plans and bamboo wall art help to bring out our zebra look.  We also have the first letter of our names painted with zebra stripes to help enhance our “zebra vibe” in the room.”

Second place campus-wide:   Demetria Perkins & Jessica Hodge of Guilford, who described their room as: “Green is serene.  When you step into our room, you’re already captured by our peacefulness.  You’ll instantly feel at home.  You get a glimpse into our lives and our personality.  You will be able to see that we’re family oriented.  You’ll see our fun side and our studious side.”

Third place campus-wide:      Megan George of Spring Garden Apartments, who described her room as: “A mixture of all things girlie from the outfits used as wall art to the pink accents that give the room a warm color palette.  If you had to give it a theme, I would have to call it ‘Into the Pink’”
