The National Residence Hall Honorary wants to make sure to notify you of the amazing work people are doing at UNCG. The “Of the Month” Awards (OTMs) recognize this effort and are listed by month below.

2011 OTMs

September, 2011

The National Residence Hall Honorary wants to make sure to notify you of the amazing work people are doing at UNCG. Following are the winners (and nominees) for SeptemberOf the Months (OTMs) as chosen by the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Congratulations to all 18 nominees!

  • Diversity Program of the Month: Bead It, Don’t Beat It
    (Nominated by Krista Prince)

    • This program, developed by Shannon O’Malley, helped the sorority women on her floor learn about diversity and how to define it. This activity allowed the participants to delve deeper into understanding their uniqueness and how that uniqueness benefits their organizations.
  • Social Program of the Month: Spring Garden Fall Kick-off Cookout
    (Nominated by Jamie Nelms)

    • After a very successful interest meeting, the Spring Garden Hall Council decided to utilize their patio space to host a program to generate more interest for their organization. On September 9th, they hosted the Fall Kick-off Cookout and had approximately 100 people attend!
  • Executive Board Member of the Month: Mike Daly
    (Nominated by Karis Riddle)

    • Mike has gone above and beyond the call of duty as VP of Web Technology for RHA, and has greatly increased Hall Council and Residence Hall Association productivity. He has improved and revamped every aspect of RHA on the web including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Email, Listservs, and a creating a brand new website!
  • Faculty/Staff of the Month: Lisa Buchanan
    (Nominated by Molly Mueller)

    • Mrs. Buchanan is a fantastic professor with a great passion for what she teaches. She is an great role model for what a elementary school teacher should be, and really strives to challenge her students to consider all sides of a story.
  • Organization of the Month: Spring Garden Hall Council
    (Nominated by Rachel Dailey)

    • Spring Garden Hall Council was nominated for the Organization OTM for September due to their outstanding contributions to the building and the residents and for all of their hard work and dedication. Their creativity and success has truly shown through, and they are very deserving.
  • Resident Advisor of the Month: Amanda Headley
    (Nominated by Christopher Countryman)

    • Amanda Headley is a thorough, kind, and helpful RA She remains devoted to her work depsite being close to graduation. She keeps a fresh perspective despite previous service.
  • Student of the Month: Blake Slaughter
    (Nominated by Natasha Todd)

    • Blake Slaughter has been very helpful to his RA throughout the month of September. He has sufficiently written FIXT reports, and gone to great lengths to report a major leak on the floor – which included looking for other staff and even leaving a voicemail for the building supervisor. Blake has constantly been a caring and model resident throughout the entire month of September.
  • Also Nominated:
    • Demarcus Steward (Nominated by Dzidzor Gborglah)
      Demarcus Steward is not only an RA but also a friend. He deserves to be rewarded due to his act of selflessness that he continues to do daily. Everyone could use a friend like him.
    • Contessa Tracy (Nominated by Sarah Harvel)
      Contessa is active in the Tower Village community and around UNCG’s campus. She is able to handle roommate disagreements that occur on her floor (and other floors!) with grace.
    • Kelsey Wiggs (Nominated by Amelia Hopkins)
      Kelsey absolutely deserves recognition for her hard work and determination for coming into the job on such short notice, being intentional to meet her residents, and for juggling the stresses of life so flawlessly while learning the RA lifestyle.
    • Heidi Mize (Nominated by Kelsey Wiggs)
      Heidi has assisted her new staff members with transitioning to the RA job. She is very willing to work hard and gives her job her all. She is a great person who is always looking out for others.
    • Brian Davis (Nominated by Teanna Young)
      Brian has been a wonderful contribution to the Ragsdale-Mendenhall staff and has worked hard this month. With all of the school, and extracurricular activities he is apart of, he has gone above and beyond with this job. He is wonderful at team work and an amazing RA.
    • Amy Kemp (Nominated by Christopher Countryman)
      Amy Kemp, Hall Council President, has taken a once more cluttered community and made it run more effectively all the while maintaining the rambunctious spirit of the hall. She is a clever, capable, honest, thoughtful and precise person.
    • Arshad Jackson (Nominated by Dzidzor Gborglah)
      Arshad Jackson is a resident to the 4th floor of Cone Residence Hall. He deserves this award because of his kindness, respect, and willingness to grow/learn.
    • Tristan Stinson (Nominated by Heidi Mize)
      Tristan without a doubt is an asset to this building as well as the university as a whole. If anyone deserves recognition for their overflowing kindness, it is Tristan Stinson.

      Tristan Stinson has faced adversity. He has emerged victorious.

November, 2011

The National Residence Hall Honorary wants to make sure to notify you of the amazing work people are doing at UNCG. Following are the winners (and nominees) for NovemberOf the Month (OTMs) as chosen by the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Congratulations to all nominees!

Advisor

  • WINNER: Bryan Botts (nominated by Ashley Legard)
    • Bryan is truly the supervisor anyone wishes to have as he has a good balance between structure/organization and a fun/laid back work environment. Bryan is compassionate and caring not only towards his staff, but the residents in Jefferson Suites.

Executive Board Member

  • WINNER: Karis Riddle (nominated by Matt Moss) ** REGIONAL WINNER **
    • In the month of November, Karis Riddle went above-and-beyond her role as the National Communications Coordinator (NCC) for Greensboro’s Residence Hall Association (RHA). She arranged to take students to the regional SAACURH conference, successfully completed her many NCC monthly tasks, and served as the parliamentarian of RHA when two important pieces of legislation needed to be reviewed.

Resident Assitant

  • WINNER: Molly Mueller (nominated by Tanner Summers)
    • Molly Mueller is everything that makes up a good Resident Adivsor. Molly is an inspiration to her fellow RAs and her residents. She makes her residents feel like they are at home on her floor by being responsive to their needs.
  • Also nominated: Heidi Mize (nominated by Brian Davis)
    • Heidi’s care for others is evident to all she meets. Heidi is tremendously administratively gifted and helpfully reminds her staff about deadlines and due dates. Every month, Heidi takes the initiative to plan the duty calendar which can be a very stressful activity. Heidi is well-deserving of recognition, though she would never ask for it.

Spotlight

  • WINNER: The 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner (nominated by Priyanka Bhamidipati)
    • Last year, Spencer held its first very successful Thanksgiving Feast. Students were able to help by cooking meals for the event and all five kitchens in North Spencer were filled with people preparing for the event. The parlor was filled with students enjoying the food during the event. During the dinner, students were able to remark upon what they were thankful for on a “Thankful Tree.”

Student

  • WINNER: Gretchen Atkins (nominated by Tanner Summers)
    • Gretchen Atkins is a shining example of what it means to be a good student and a community leader. In the month of November, Gretchen participated in a variety of volunteer opportunities (such as helping the Salvation Army by organizing donations), remained involved in the Honors College program, and maintained a campus job. She also encouraged other

Advisor

  • WINNER: Regina Gavin (nominated by Natesha Gillespie)
    • Regina works hard to support her staff and building. She always sends out emails to residents to reminding them of events that are going on in the building. She makes herself ready and willing to help anyone who comes to her with questions or concerns.

Bulletin Board

  • WINNER: Amelia Hopkins (nominated by: Heidi Mize)
    • For her January bulletin board, Amelia Hopkins created a snowflaked-themed bulletin board called “Take What You Need.” She made several different types of snowflakes and wrote various encouraging words on them relating the needs of her residents. Her residents were then able to reflect on the things they value or need in their lives.

Custodial

  • WINNER: Mr. Tony (nominated by Sarah Harvel)
    • Mr. Tony is the custodial and maintenance man for Tower Village as well as for Spring Garden. Mr. Tony works hard to keep the breezeways clean and Tower Village looking nice for its residents. Mr. Tony offers a smile to everyone he sees and loves to get to know the residents in the building.

Executive Board Member

Residence Life Staff Member

  • WINNER: Krista Prince (nominated by Emily Strandwitz)
    • During the month of January, Krista Prince (Coordinator for Residence Life in Cone Hall) was a truly outstanding leader. She assisted with the planning and successful implementation of the 2012-2013 Resident Advisor search process which involved coordinating a three day long interview process. In addition, Krista found time to arrange to take students to a nearby drive-in conference (the Student Leadership and Diversity Conference hosted by the University of South Carolina).

Resident Assistant

  • WINNER: Eric Ziemba (nominated by Kemi Chukwuka)
    • Eric is committed and loyal to his Resident Advisor position. He recently created at new ongoing program in Tower Village where residents can come and receive free coffee every Thursday night (they just need to bring their own mug). Eric also makes creative advertisements, is adored by his residents, and keeps the Tower Village RA Office clean.
  • Also nominated: Nikki Johnson (nominated by Bryttanye Bannister)
    • Nikki was very helpful to her residents in the basement of South Spencer when three of the bathrooms flooded. She kept calm and managed to alert her residents as well as the maintenance staff. Here quick response helped the mess to be addressed and fixed.
  • Also nominated: Ryan Redd (nominated by Brandon Lowery)
    • Ryan Redd is a role model and an outstanding Senior RA. He is responsible for many administrative duties including scheduling daily duty and leading Hall Council.
  • Also nominated: Dominique Lewis (nominated by Natesha Gillespie)
    • Dominique is a new staff member and has worked very hard to learn all of the information that the Resident Advisor job entails. Dominique makes herself available to her residents.
  • Also nominated: Niawna Barnes (nominated by Alex Wong)
    • Niawna has demonstrated good time management in regards to her Resident Advisors responsibilities and her nursing responsibilities. When the staff is stressed-out, Niawna brings positive energy.
  • Also nominated: Abigail Bogardus (nominated by Benoit Sabourin)
    • Abigail has been very busy balancing her Resident Advisor responsibilities and her work with the “Stage Door” production. She is also a member of the Spartan Orientation Staff and a Dean’s List Student.
  • Also nominated: Stephen Gates (nominated by Emmanuel Braswell)
    • Stephen has displayed outstanding leadership qualities. He is always willing to go above-and-beyond the Resident Advisor job description and is a vital staff member. Stephen’s artistic talents light up the first floor and engage his residents.
  • Also nominated: Heidi Mize (nominated by Stephen Gates)
    • Heidi has been one of the most active and professional Resident Advisors on campus. She has a strong work ethic and makes sure she is clear about the policies she enforces. Almost every time other RAs need help, Heidi supports them (even when she is not on duty).
  • Also nominated: Amelia Hopkins (nominated by Kelsey Wiggs)
    • Amelia is a great role model in her community. She genuinely cares about people and it shows through both her work and her everyday life. She has been a great person to turn to whenever someone needs help or just a shoulder to lean on.
  • Also nominated: Emmanuel Braswell (nominated Teanna Young)
    • Emmanuel has been a wonderful contribution to his staff. He is very eager to learn and always has a positive attitude. He has proven himself to be trustworthy and dependable staff member.

Residential Community

  • WINNER: The Spencers (nominated by Nicolette Johnson)
    • The Spencers are the kind of community were, when things go wrong, there is always someone there to support you. The Spencers also have a great Coordinator for Residence Life, Marianne Honrath, and Assistant Coordinator for Residence Life, Jerry Staples. In addition, the Living-Learning Coordinator, Anne Barton, concentrates on creating important connections with the freshman students living in the Spencers.

Social Program

  • WINNER: Tiny the Tower Village Triceratops (nominated by Emily Strandwitz)
    • Tiny the Tower Village Triceratops was a program that was created to facilitate the building of community in Tower Village Suites. Tiny is a toy dinosaur that is hidden throughout the building and is redeemed for prizes. In January, Tiny had “babies” that were hidden throughout the building.
  • Also nominated: ZUMBA! (nominated by Sarah Pickett)
    • In the month of January, RAs Molly Mueller and Sarah Pickett noticed that many of the women living on their floors were attending Zumba sessions at the Campus Recreational Center. One of the residents had recently been certified to teach ZUMBA! workouts and agreed to lead a lesson in the Spencers.

Student

  • WINNER: Victoria “Tori” Brigman (nominated by Jamie Sellers)
    • Tori Brigman is a member of the Ragsdale-Mendenhall Hall Council. She is consistently dedicated to her position on Hall Council and frequently contributes excellent ideas as well as implements brilliant programs such as a study group program. She created a survey that collected information on the general classes that residents were taking and used that information to create 11 different study groups.

  • WINNER: Abigail Bogardus (nominated by Angelica Kielczewska)
    • “Abigail Bogardus has, in my eyes, been an outstanding advisor for our residence hall. She is in charge of our hall council and I feel as though she has been doing a good job getting all of the information out there about it.”

Resident Assistant of the month

  • WINNER: Danielle Hughes (nominated by Kaylin Doyle)
    • “Danielle is a prime example of what I believe every resident assistant should be. She is positive, relatable, hard-working, knowledgeable, but mostly she cares.”

Social Program of the month

  • WINNER: PH Game Night (nominated by Niwana Barnes)
    • “Games like Taboo, Apples to Apples, cards, UNO, and more were set up at different stations that became hot-spots for fun loving competitors. Our goal was to get residents acclimated to their new home and comfortable with meeting and socializing with new people, as well as having fun before beginning classes.”

  • WINNER: Ashley Baker (nominated by Kaylin Doyle)
    • “Everything I have seen of Ashley since her arrival at UNCG has been done with excitement, passion, and a positive attitude. She embraces every moment and seeks out new opportunities of getting to know new people who will quickly become friends, engaging in and supporting the UNCG community, and serving the Guilford County and North Carolina communities.”

    • “Meg Horton is the Director of the Grogan Residential College (GRC) at UNCG and has been working to provide encouragement and positive environments for those involved in the residential college. She has gone above and beyond her responsibility as the director and for that she is both loved and commended by her staff and peers.”

Bulletin Board of the month

  • WINNER: Breona Gonzalez (nominated by Eric Scott)
    • “Breona’s well planned, made, and implemented bulletin board coupled with her voter registration campaign and voter education efforts with individual students demonstrate her interest in civic responsibility as well as her passion for community engagement”

Educational Program of the month

  • WINNER: Chick-Fil-A Forum (nominated by Anna Patton)
    • “Overall, the forum was an incredibly successful program. The event drew nearly 100 students and staff members from across campus. Some of the outstanding parts of the program included the content of the topic covered, the organization structure, and the respect displayed throughout the event.”

Graduate Assistant of the month

  • WINNER: Aaron Wainman (nominated by Benjamin Huff)
    • “As someone planning to enter the field of Higher Education, namely Residence Life, Aaron has inspired me that anything is possible- that every student population deserves to be represented. He has taught me that hard work pays off, and that no effort is exerted in vain.”

Organization of the month

  • WINNER: UNCG RHA (nominated by Anna Patton)
    • “For UNCG’s RHA, September was a month of incredible contributions including hall council support, programmatic success, and organizational improvement.”

Residence Life Faculty/Staff of the month

  • WINNER: Eric Scott (nominated by Megan Delph)
    • “Eric has the privilege of serving as the Coordinator for Residence Life for The Historic Residential Quadrangle of “The Quad”. Eric has shown the alumni, Chancellor, and current faculty, staff, and students what a wonderful place, and home The Historic Residential Quadrangle is. The students and staff of the Quad just don’t know how special Eric is and how appreciated his efforts to go above and beyond truly are.”

Resident Assistant of the month

  • WINNER: Amelia Hopkins (nominated by Jon Walter)
    • “Being a first year RA myself, I proudly say that Amelia has been a mentor and role model for me from the first day. All of the residents of the building love her and know that even though she is busy, she will make the time to talk with them if they ever need an ear.”

Social Program of the month

  • WINNER: The Quad Soccer Tailgate (nominated by Eric Scott)
    • “It seemed as if the entire athletics department at UNCG had gotten behind this residence hall staff led event. As the event began to wind down, the RA staff escorted students to the Soccer Stadium where they were able to watch the team play and enjoy a fireworks show after the game.”

Student of the month

  • WINNER: Schuyler Hunt (nominated by Annie Childress)
    • “It seemed as if the entire athletics department at UNCG had gotten behind this residence hall staff led event. As the event began to wind down, the RA staff escorted students to the Soccer Stadium where they were able to watch the team play and enjoy a fireworks show after the game.”

  • WINNER: Maggie Gillespie (nominated by Nathaniel Hensley)
    • “Maggie Gillespie is the UNC Greensboro Residence Hall Association Adviser. Maggie has shown throughout December her dedication and enthusiasm towards our organization. Maggie has advised the executive board in the conception, development, and preparation of the 1st Annual Hall Council Cup, a leadership oriented program that hopes to inspire and re-energize our entire leadership population from the RHA President to the Residence Hall Council birthday Chairperson. “

Desk Assistant

  • WINNER: Taylor Fox (nominated by Eric Scott)
    • “Taylor Fox is a desk assistant in The Quad. She always demonstrates exemplary service, but went above and beyond several times during the month of December. Taylor was able to provide excellent assistance to several students in need and put in extra time to help colleagues.”

Resident Assistant of the month

  • WINNER: Alfred Anyanwu (nominated by Caitlin Grindall)
    • “I nominate Alfred Anyanwu to be recognized for his helpfulness, ability to multi-task his many responsibilities, willingness to take on extra duties for the benefit of others, and taking incentive duty during Winter break. He is a wonderful example of what it means to be a Resident Advisor, a student, and most importantly a Spartan!”

Student of the month

  • WINNER: Megan Rascoe (nominated by Rachel Duncan)
    • “Exam time is busy and stressful for all students, but during the week leading up to exams, Megan took time from her studying to clean a common room that is shared by the residents on the ninth floor. Megan’s actions showed her thoughtfulness and consideration for her hall-mates and their need for a clean place to study.”

Educational Program

  • WINNER: Presidential Inauguration (nominated by Krista Prince)
    • “The Program Coordinators for Make a Difference House, Mosaic, and First Year experience living and learning communities wanted to enable their participants to attend the Presidential Inauguration in an effort to reinforce the importance of Civic Responsibility as one of Housing and Residence Life’s core values.”

Exec Board Member

  • WINNER: Nathaniel Hensley (nominated by Anna Patton)
    • “It is my absolute pleasure to nominate Nathaniel Hensley for an “Of The Month” award. He is truly a RHA adviser’s dream come true. I have had the pleasure of working with Nathaniel for a semester, and continue to be amazed at his work ethic, vision, compassion and investment in our RHA and our UNCG community.”

Graduate Assistant

  • WINNER: Aaron Wainman (nominated by Kailyn Doyle)
    • “Aaron Wainman has exhibited skills in his graduate position that far exceed the expectations of a first year graduate student. Aaron has pushed himself to excel within the Housing and Residence Life department to the same standards of a full time professional. Under his supervision, the International House and Mosaic programs have continued to develop as they challenge the participants of each to grow in their understanding and appreciation of diversity and social justice.”

Organization

  • WINNER: North Spencer Hall Council (nominated by Anna Patton)
    • “The North Spencer Hall Council, however, not only maintained a focus on developing our residential community; they did so while preparing for a new semester! The first way North Spencer Hall Council excelled in the month of February was through participation in winter hall council training–even braving lingering snow to join the event. A second way the North Spencer Hall Council has fostered student development in January is through proactive, strategic programming. The final way hall council has really committed to student leadership development in the month of January is through laying a plan for the rest of the semester.”

Passive Program

  • WINNER: Hall Council Happy Birthday! (nominated by Eric Scott)
    • “Hall Council Happy Birthday is a passive program conceived and implemented by Dickson Ibeh-Kingsley on the UNCG campus. Kingsley send search resident living in The Quad a short message wishing them a happy birthday and informing them of upcoming hall council events and activities. The program has enjoyed an overwhelmingly positive response from the students in the community.”

Residence Life Faculty/Staff

  • WINNER: Student Staff Recruitment/Selection Committee (nominated by Krista Prince)
    • “Student Staff Recruitment and Selection Committee worked tirelessly for months to successfully recruit RA candidates. In January, they adjusted to challenges posed by the weather to facilitate a successful interview weekend.”

Resident Assistant

  • WINNER: Molly Mueller (nominated by Anna Patton)
    • “Serving as a returning RA in any community already speaks volumes about the contributions of a staff member to one’s staff, but serving as a returning RA while student teaching as a graduating senior sets Molly apart in the month of January. Molly has always gone above and beyond in her duties as a North Spencer Staff member, but the month of January is a perfect example of her outstanding work. All in all, Molly has made outstanding contributions academically, developmentally, and professionally to the North Spencer Residential Community, which is why she deserve to be considered for Resident Assistant of the Month for January.”

  • WINNER: Jefferson Suites RA Staff (nominated by Briana Kitchel)
    • “This OTM is for the recognition of an outstanding RA Staff displaying high levels of passion, resilience and care for their job and fellow coworkers. I can’t imagine another staff that has kept it classy and professional while dealing with major changes over the course of a month than this one.”

    • “Anna always strives to help other in any way she can. She is there for them when they need help and is a wonderful adviser.”

  • WINNER: Message in a Bottle (nominated by Krista Prince)
    • “Katy Peterson, RA in Cone, collaborated with Tri Sigma member Leanne King as well as Adopt-a-cop Stewart to plan an interactive alcohol related program for member education.”

Executive Board Member – REGIONAL WINNER!

  • WINNER: Annie Chidress (nominated by Maggie Gillespie)
    • “Annie started the year unsure of her role or how to implement it. As a big picture person, Annie struggled with detailing the programs set out in front of her. While some were traditional programs, others were her ideas, and her ideas were grand and ambitious. Annie worked her way through first semester programming with some success and some failure.This semester, she has worked to articulate specific goals, detail to-do lists and delegate responsibility to others. She has worked through time conflicts with executive council members and really grown as a leader.I’m very proud of her growth this semester!”

  • WINNER: Dr. Kim Sousa-Peoples (nominated by Benoit Sabourin)
    • “This OTM nominates Dr. Kim Sousa-Peoples for her outstanding commitment to service at UNCG. She has exemplified the University’s motto through her constant strive to better the UNCG community.”

Residence Life Faculty/Staff

  • WINNER: Philip Garrison (nominated by Chris Gregory)
    • “Phillip, our IT Guy, is rarely recognized for the great work he does for the department and students. This month, he has redesigned the access system for one of our new halls, implemented a time-saving and user-friendly reporting system for residence life, and still managed to handle the day-to-day needs of the department and students.”

Resident Assistant

  • WINNER: Hugh Sandoe (nominated by Pierre Campbell)

    • “This program was created by Demarcus and Cassie. The program focused on the issue of human trafficking. Residents learned the facts about human trafficking, how to prevent human trafficking, and discussed the topic.”

    • “When I think of the name Briana Kitchel, I think of many things. She is a passionate RA, former Hall Council President, Leader in RAA, a Spartan Guide (Our school’s student tour leaders) and an amazing friend. This semester, however, Briana has taken on a brand new role. Briana was elected as VP Recognition for the Kappa Gamma Mu chapter here at UNCG after being abroad in the Fall of 2012. From the minute she took on the position, she was scheduling recognition dates and programs, learning her way around the NRHH database, and serving as a leader and mentor to the 20 new members our chapter gained after the Fall 2012 inductions. Briana came into the executive board with conference experience and represented our chapter with excellence and pride at our recent NCARH conference in Charlotte, NC and even helped write the winning NRHH Case Study. Through her many goals and projects, she has completely energized our executive board and many members of our organization.”

    • “RA Jane facilitated an egg hunt for her sorority women. The eggs contained questions about UNCG that they answered and returned to her for a small piece of candy. At the end of the 10 days the resident with the most correctly answered questions won a bigger prize. Since the sorority women are so busy at this time of year, it was a great way to keep them engaged in the hall in a passive but educational way!”

    • “In the month of March, Tower Village’s favorite toy dinosaur (with a fondness for hiding) welcomed over 100 eggs worth of “babies” for residents to find. By the end of the program, over 500 eggs had been found, hidden, and found again. Through this program, residents of Tower Village are able to bond by having a little fun … which contributes to a sense of community in building.”

Community Service Program (Regional Winner)

  • WINNER: Kidfest: For Kids of All Ages (nominated by Eric Scott)
    • KidFest is a fundraising program recently started at UNCG that set a goal to purchase summer reading books for first and second grade students at a local elementary school whose students were in need. Four times the fundraising goal was reached and books were purchased for every student at the school. The fundraising was celebrated at a kid-friendly outdoor event on an April afternoon which featured donated food, games, music, arts and crafts, and camaraderie.

Executive Board Member

  • WINNER: Lauren Putnam (nominated by Anna Patton)
    • The month of April is always a busy one for residence life programming: end of the year ceremonies, exam breakers, and de-stress opportunities. Serving as a hall council Programming Chair can get overwhelming with so many different types of events on the horizon, but instead, Lauren Putnam has excelled in that role during the month of April. Lauren has served as our hall council programming chair throughout the entire year. She has been integral in the planning and implementation of a variety of different activities; however, one event has stood above the rest due to her leadership–the North Spencer End of Year Semi-Formal.

First Year Student

  • WINNER: Robert Wilkes (nominated by Kailyn Doyle)
    • This OTM is to nominate Robert Wilkes as first year student of the month. He has made great contributions to Moore/Strong residence hall not only as hall council president, but also as a resident of the community.

  • WINNER: Branden Abushanab (nominated by Laurel Everett)
    • This OTM is written for Branden Abushanab of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Psychology Department. This is being written to acknowledge the helpfulness and support he gave to his Lab course and for fulfilling a role that he was not expected to go above and beyond with.

  • WINNER: Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority (Epsilon Nu chapter) (nominated by Katie Kriner)
    • UNCG’s Epsilon Nu chapter illustrated selfless service this past month through their twelve hour long Teeter Totter philanthropy event on College Ave from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm on Wednesday April 24th, 2013. A large wooden teeter totter is set up and sisters must teeter totter in shifts all day while spreading awareness of the cause and encouraging passersby to donate. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation and furthermore the Robbie Paige Memorial, a fund that supports play therapy for terminally ill children by developing and financing play rooms and toys for children too ill to leave the hospital.

    • Kory Burgess designed a new “hub” for camps and conferences that will meet the needs of many staff members as they collaborate to provide UNCG guests with an excellent conference experience.

    • This program was an OTM because it showed off the many talents of our residents.

  • WINNER: Paige Daniel and The Quad Recycling Task Force (nominated by Eric Scott)
    • Paige Daniel is an ACRL in The Quad who has worked all year on The Recycling Task Force, an independently initiated project that has come to fruition in The month of April. Efforts include new recycling bin placement, coffee stops with reusable fun mugs from the thrift shop, and a soda bottle re-purposing program.

    • Photographer Steve Schulte once said, “the day is what you make it! So why not make it a great one?” If I had to capture Luke Poole’s outlook on life in a few words, theseare the words I would choose.

    • Andrea has established herself as both a physical and philosophical leader on The Quad Staff, embodying the set of values The Quad staff operates from including poise, industriousness, loyalty, friendship,skill, and self-control. Andrea is an excellent role model to both her residents and fellow staff and through her everyday actions inspire so they are to be better people. Andrea is a natural teacher and has helped new staff learn the job and feel supported in the process. She has gone above and beyond in The month of August and has established a work ethic and philosophy that will allow her to continue to be successful for the duration of the year.

    • Here I go again, bragging about my own darn staff. To clarify, by “darn,” I really mean “amazing, passionate, inquisitive,enthusiastic, bar-setting, rock-star” staff.

    • The Housing and Residence Life Quad Carnival was again a huge success. With over 2,000 student in attendance, and partnerships with various offices on campus, HRL offered a great program to students early in the year.

Spotlight

  • WINNER: John Jenkins (nominated by Megan Delph)
    • John went the extra mile today as a UNCG Spartan to make sure that a fellow Spartan was okay. He was not acting in the capacity of an RA but rather as a good Samaritan. It’s more people like John going the extra mile that make UNCG such a wonderful place and tight-knit family.

  • WINNER: Alexus Gordon (nominated by Luke Poole)
    • Alexus Gordon has exhibited an incredible degree of empathy and concern for others as she has gone out of her way to help her international student roommate, Akira, navigate culture shock and adjust to life here at UNC Greensboro (not to mention the U.S.!). Thanks to Alexus’ positivity and openness, Akira’s transition to our community has been excellent, and the two now both enjoy a fruitful friendship.

    • In her program, Carissa gave her residents the opportunity to donate to the Clara House, a non-profit organization in Greensboro, North Carolina, with the goal of helping women battling homelessness or domestic violence. She designed a program that both aided women in need in her community, while giving residents a chance to help and rewarding them for doing so.

Educational Program

  • WINNER: Cirque du Ville – A TV Carnival Extravaganza! (nominated by by Ashley Wrenn)
    • This educational program aimed at presenting academic resources on campus in a fun, creative, and interesting way. It do so through games relating to the topic at hand, as well as a great deal of fun and excitement. Many students who came left with a lot of joy and newly learned information.

    • Morgan Hudson is an exemplary leader within the UNCG community. She is a hard working and selfless person that strives to make RHA programs enjoyable for UNCG. Her passion for UNCG is evident through the work she does with RHA. As a friend, I consider myself truly fortunate to have her as a friend, RHA resource, and an inspiration to my life as an RA.

    • September proved to be a challenging month for CRL Ashley Dobbs. From faulty fire alarms to flooding apartments, nothing seemed to shake this CRL! For the reasons above, Ashley more than deserves this recognition.

    • A first year RA, Zayrne Thompson facilitated a major flood. His maturity, critical thinking, problem solving skills, and commitment to supporting the needs of his residents impressed me that night, and continue to do so.

  • WINNER: First Year Experience LLC (nominated by Maggie Gillespie)
    • These efforts were created, flushed out and executed solely by the FYE students. These students showed incredible passion, collaboration, initiative and drive throughout the month of September to support one of their own, come together as a community and bond over something bigger than themselves. This was a true example of students implementing UNCG’s motto, “Do Something Bigger Altogether.”

Social Program

  • WINNER: Grogan Night of the Arts (nominated by Ryan Collins)
    • Grogan Night of the Arts is a talent showcase covering the broach spectrum of the arts, including the visual and performing arts. Students from the hall were invited to perform an act for an audience of their peers. The event included a casual dinner of hors d’oevres, drinks, and chicken catered by Chik-fil-a. More than 100 residents attended to watch and perform in the event, most of whom stayed from more than two hours until the program’s conclusion. Overall, it was an excellent evening of entertainment and community development.

    • Ms. Eva, the housekeeper in Jefferson Suites, deserves recognition for going above and beyond this month to protect the students of the hall and to keep the facility clean.
