Subject: Housing Application Opens in January – Important Changes!

Hey Spartans!

Big news! The housing application opens in January, and things are a little different this year. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Your Priority Day: You will have one full day to apply based on your class status.
    • Jan 27: Graduates, Seniors, Juniors
    • Jan 28: Sophomores
    • Jan 29: Freshmen
  • All Day to Apply: You can apply anytime on your day until 11:59 PM. Applying early does NOT give you an advantage. Applying consists of agreeing to the terms of the housing contract and paying the $200 prepayment (unless your SAI is $1000 or less). The application step will only take a few minutes as you will not pick your room at this time. We have included a link to the Housing Contract to expedite your application process on your day.
  • Check Your Status: In January, you’ll get an email from HRL with your class status and your priority day. You will also be able to check Artemis.
  • What to Do on Your Day:
    • Fill out your housing application.
    • Agree to the contract terms and sign the housing contract.
    • Pay the $200 prepayment (unless waived).

Completing your application on your priority day gives you Priority Status. That means:

  • You can retain your room (apartments only)
    • You can pull in roommates into a retained room (they must also have Priority Status).
  • You can pick a room during the priority period.
    • Priority status students will be able to pick rooms individually or in groups of 4, 3 or 2.
  • You can be part of a group and be assigned to an apartment, suite, or room by another priority applicant.
    • All students in a group or being pulled into a room must have priority status.

What happens if I do not apply on my priority day?

If you miss your day, you will not have Priority Status and cannot join the group process. You can still apply after priority until April 15, but you will not be able to join a roommate group, retain your room or be pulled into a room.

To be clear if you miss your priority day:

  • You will not be assigned a room during the priority period.
  • You will not be able to pulled into a retained room at a later period
  • You will not be able to form a roommate group of 2, 3 or 4.
  • You WILL be able to select your space after those in priority (approximately 2700 students).

Why the change? Last year, over 500 students without priority were pulled into groups. We fixed this loophole so Priority Status students really get priority.

More info will come before school starts. For now, mark your calendar!

Pay your $200 Prepayment

If you have an Student Aid Index (SAI) of $1000 or less on your 2025-26 FAFSA application, this fee is waived.

Once you have completed your housing application and paid your $200 prepayment, you will be able to choose your assignment when the self assign period begins. If the Self Assign period is open, you will be able to self assign 2 business days after completing the $200 prepayment.

  • What is a complete Application?
    • A complete application means a student has signed the housing contract and paid the $200 prepayment unless otherwise waived
    • What is a complete application?
  • How do I receive priority status?
    • You will apply on Artemis, our all access housing portal, by agreeing to the contract and paying the $200 prepayment (unless otherwise waived). You must have a complete application on your priority day (Jan 27 to 29) to receive priority status.
    • A link to Artemis can be found in the top right hand corner of this page. The application is open on your priority day and will close at 11:59pm.  If you do not receive priority status, as long as you complete an application by April 15, you are guaranteed housing for the 2026-27 academic year.
    • Note: If your SAI is $1000 or less on your 2025-26 FAFSA, your $200 prepayment will be waived.
  • How do I know if my $200 prepayment is waived?
    • If on your 2025-26 FAFSA the Student Aid Index or SAI is $1000 or less, your fee is waived.
  • When is the Priority Returning Housing Application Open?
    • 1/27/2026: Returner Graduates, Seniors, Juniors: Priority Returner Housing Application Day
    • 1/28/2026: Returner Sophomores: Priority Housing Application Day
    • 1/29/2026
    • Returner Freshman: Priority Housing Application Day
  • Who can receive priority status?
    • Those currently living on campus in Spring 2026 can apply on their assigned priority day for Fall 2026-Spring 2027 On-Campus Housing.
  • Why should I apply on my priority day?
    • Those who receive priority status have the first pick of housing before incoming students and those filling out the general guaranteed housing application. If you live in an apartment (Tower Village, Spartan Village, Lofts on Lee, Spring Garden Apartments) you have the ability to retain your room for next year. If you want to retain your room, you have to have priority status.
  • What do I need to do to assign with a preferred roommate(s)?
    • All students of a roommate group must have a complete priority application.
    • You will then have the option to create a group with other priority applicants.
    • When it is time to select a space only one of you (group leader) will need to log into Artemis and assign all students to a room. We recommend the student with the earliest selection time choose the space. When logging into Artemis you will select “Group of 2” or “Groups of 3&4”, this will take you to select your room.
  • I have a friend/family member coming to UNCG as a new first time student, how do we get put together and where would we be assigned?
    • If a current resident wants to be assigned with a new first time student
    • They would be assigned with that new first time student in a traditional double room.
    • Both students would need to send an email to hrl@uncg.edu after they have both completed* a housing application and request to be placed together in a double room (The new student application opens February 2).
    • Once both emails have been received and completeness of the application has been confirmed, we will assign together in a traditional double room.
    • Definition of a new first time student – Admitted by UNCG as a first time student.  Does not matter what their class standing.  These are not transfer students.
  • How do I include a current non-resident in my roommate group?
    • We do not have a group process for non-residential students.

*Note: A complete application means a student has signed the housing contract and paid the $200 prepayment unless otherwise waived.

Current Campus Resident Housing Application FAQ

Students who complete their application after the priority period, will not receive priority status. They will be eligible to log in and select a room at another time.

To give yourself the best chance to get the room you’ll want meet the Returner PRIORITY Application requirements:

  • Log into Artemis, complete the Returner Application, and agree to the terms of the Housing Contract on your Priority Day You must pay the $200 prepayment (unless otherwise waived) for your application to be considered complete.

Current residents who wait to complete the application after the priority period will be eligible to self-assign after students with priority status.

No, we cannot hold spots for someone that is not a UNCG student.

If a current resident wants to be assigned with a new first time student

  • They would be assigned with that new first time student in a traditional double room.
  • Both students would need to send an email to hrl@uncg.edu after they have both completed* a housing application and request to be placed together in a double room (The new student application opens February 2).
  • Once both emails have been received and completeness of the application has been confirmed, we will assign together in a traditional double room.

Definition of a new first time student – Admitted by UNCG as a first time student.  Does not matter what their class standing.  These are not transfer students.

Only students with Priority Status can participate in the group process.

The simple answer is no. If a member of your group decides to cancel their housing after you have been assigned, you are not responsible for filling that space, or paying for that space. A new resident will self-assign into that space.

It is always in your best interest to be as sure as possible about your grouping before you assign together.

No, you must read your emails and assign on the correct day.

Join the Roommate Finder to find roommates and/or friends at UNCG.

All on-campus students will be given the default meal plan. Students will be sent an email on how to change this option at a later date.

A room change period will be available for students. This allows students to to select a new room while keeping your old room, without cancelling your housing application.

Once Current Campus Residents, Upperclass Non-Residents, or Transfer students have selected a room, they will be able to see available/unfilled rooms to make changes to their selection.

If you don’t see a space you are interested in, you might want to consider Room Swap instead.

Retaining your room is for APARTMENTS ONLY.

There could be several reasons why you are unable to retain your room:

  • You haven’t completed the priority housing application*. You must receive priority status to retain your room.
    • A complete application means that you have completed the housing application and paid the $200 prepayment (unless otherwise waived).
  • You are living in freshman housing. Freshman are required to move to upperclassmen housing, so that new freshman can move into their spaces.
  • You are living in Jefferson Suites or the Quad. Students in the Quad and Jefferson are not permitted to retain their spaces.
  • Your room is an accessible accommodation room. There are various reasons why a room is considered accessible and must be held for specific students. These rooms cannot be retained and will not be available during the assignment period.

There are several reasons why this could happen:

  • You already completed the application. You can only submit the application once.
  • You are not currently living on campus. Only a current student can receive priority status.
  • The application is temporarily closed. A notice will appear under the Artemis graphic indicating any temporary closure.
