Housing Application Deadlines

When you need to apply for housing on campus depends on what “type” of student you are. Are you a new freshman getting excited about your first year on campus, or a graduate student who already knows the ropes? When you know which category describes you, you will be able to select the deadlines and video instructions that apply to you, using the tabs below.

The housing deadlines are posted below, along with instructions and videos to help you through the steps to properly apply for campus housing.

Current campus residents have two major dates to understand. The first is the PRIORITY Deadline. In order to have the best chance to assign yourself to the room that you want, it is important to meet the priority deadline. Meeting that will allow you to choose a room before students in all other categories. Meeting the Non-Priority deadline means that you won’t select a room until after all students who met the priority deadline have the chance to assign themselves to a room.

The 2020-21 Housing Application is available online for Current Campus Residents (Returners) from Jan. 22 - May 1, 2020.

Jan. 22 – Feb. 9, 2020:
PRIORITY Deadline

To give yourself the best chance to get the room you'll want meet the PRIORITY Application deadline of Feb. 9, 2020:
  • Log into Artemis, complete the Returner Priority Application, and agree to the terms of the 2020-2021 Housing Contract by 4 p.m. on Feb. 9.
  • If you meet the priority deadline, you will be given a window of time to select a room, between Feb. 17 and March 1.

Feb. 17 - May 1, 2020:
Non-Priority Deadline

Returners who complete the non-priority application between Feb. 17 and May 1 will be eligible to self-assign between March 10 and June 29.

Jan. 30 – Feb. 9, 2020

Priority Returners Room Retention and Roommate Pull-in opens on Jan. 30, at 10 a.m., and closes at 4 p.m., Feb. 9.
  • Students living in Spartan Village, Lofts on Lee, Spring Garden, and Tower Village who complete a returner priority application can select to live in their current Spring 2020 assignment for the 2020-2021 academic year. They can also pull in a roommate or roommates to any spaces that will not be occupied by a current roommate between Jan. 30 and 4 p.m. on Feb. 9.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to discern from their current roommate(s) as to whether a space will be available in the suite or apartment.
  • Duplicate requests for the same space will be voided.
  • Ashby College (Mary Foust), Strong College (Guilford) and Lloyd International Honors College (Gray and North/South Spencer) must complete the Housing Contract Renewal. Those room assignments will be made in-house, including keeping current assignments.

Feb. 12, 2020

Priority Returner Applicants Email Sent
  • Students who completed the Priority Returner Application will receive an email with their randomly selected priority times that will be used during the priority self-assign process. This priority time will be used in the Group Assignment Process and the Individual Self-Assignment Process
  • In the group process, the lowest priority time in a group of 2, 3, or 4 students will be used in prioritizing the self-assignment.
  • In the individual process, the priority time and class standing (freshman, then sophomores, then juniors, then seniors) will be used in prioritizing the individual self-assignment.


Feb. 17-May 1, 2020

Non-Priority Returner Application is available
  • Returners who did not complete the Priority Returner Application by Feb. 9 can apply and be pulled into a group, but they cannot go through the priority self-assign process.
  • The Returner Application will close on May 1, 2020.
  • Students completing the Non-Priority Returner Application may begin self-assignment on March 10.
  • Any current resident who does not complete a returner application by May 1, 2020, will not be guaranteed housing.
  • A waiting list for current residents who did not apply by May 1, 2020 will open online on May 2, 2020. Students on the waiting list will only be assigned on a space available basis in late July/early August.

Feb. 18, 2020

Priority Returner GROUP OF 4 and 3 Self Assign opens
  • Students who completed the returner priority application and have a group of 4 or 3 can select one student in the group to log into Artemis and assign the group based on their earliest randomly selected priority time. (e.g. a group of 4 students trying to sign up for a Spring Garden apartment and have times of 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. This group would have the student with the 10 a.m. time slot sign up all 4 group members for an available Spring Garden 4-bedroom apartment.)
  • Groups of 4 students will only see suites/apartments with 4 vacancies.
  • Quad Double-Doubles will be set up so that 4 students can assign themselves to share a bathroom between the bedrooms.
  • Use the attached Group Assignment Worksheet to gather information for the person who will be doing the self-assignment for the group.

Feb. 20, 2020

Priority Returner GROUP OF 2 Self Assign opens
  • Students who completed the priority returner application and have a group of 2 can select one student in the group to log into Artemis and assign the group based on their earliest randomly selected priority time. (e.g. a group of 2 students trying to sign up for a Tower Village apartment and have times of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This group would have the student with the 10 a.m. time slot sign up both group members for an available Tower Village suite with two available rooms.)
  • Groups of 2 students will only see suites/apartments with 2 vacancies.
  • Quad Single-Singles will be set up so 2 students can assign themselves to share a bathroom between the 2 private rooms.
  • Use the attached Group Assignment Worksheet to gather information for the person who will be doing the self-assignment for the group.
  • There will be group of 2 spaces in the following traditional double residence halls: Cone, Reynolds, Ragsdale/Mendenhall, Moore/Strong, Phillips/Hawkins, and Weil/Winfield.

Feb. 22-June 30, 2020

Priority Returner Self-Assign opens
  • Current residents who completed the returner priority application can log into Artemis and assign themselves based on their classification and randomly selected priority time.
  • You will be able to sign up for any available space in the upperclassman halls.


Feb. 24-June 30, 2020

De-Assignment

Once you have selected a space, you have the option to be removed from the space without canceling your application so you can log back into Artemis and select another space. The process can take up to 24 hours. To de-assign, you complete the form in Artemis and then within 24 hours a staff member will de-assign you from your space and notify you that you can log back into Artemis and select another space.
  • Once you have de-assigned, the room you were in will become available to all other currently unassigned students.
  • Once you have de-assigned, you will be able to go back into ARTEMIS and select a new room.
  • You will have until June 30 to de-assign yourself from the space. After that, your assignment can't be changed.

March 11-June 30, 2020

Non-priority Self-Assignment
  • Returners who applied AFTER Feb. 9 and new students not currently living on campus during Spring 2020 will begin to log into Artemis and assign themselves.
  • Returners who apply after May 1 will be placed on a Waiting List and will not be guaranteed housing for 2020-2021.


May 1, 2020

Returner Application closes
  • Returners who apply after May 1 will be placed on a Waiting List and will not be guaranteed housing for 2020-2021.
  • A waiting list for current residents who did not apply by May 1, 2020, will open online on May 3, 2020. Students on the waiting list will only be assigned on a space-available basis in late July/early August.

June 30, 2020

Self-Assignment and De-Assignment ends June 30, 2020
  • Current residents can self-assign to any available room after March 10 and until June 30. Students may request to be de-assigned from any room that they signed up for during the self-assignment process.
  • Once you have de-assigned, the room you were in will become available to all other currently unassigned students
  • Once you have de-assigned, you will be able to go back into ARTEMIS and select a new room
  • You will have until June 30 to self-assign. After June 30 you will be assigned by Housing Staff.
New applicants are those who will be new first-year students (freshmen) in the upcoming semester. New Applicants should ultimately be concerned with meeting the Guaranteed Housing Deadline. However, it is always best to get your application completed as early as possible. You will have the best chance of being assigned to a residence hall you prefer the earlier you complete the housing application.

Feb. 17-May 31, 2020

The housing application and pre-payment can be made using Artemis, the all-access housing portal. New applicants who apply by May 31, 2020, will be guaranteed housing on campus for 2020-21.

New freshmen are assigned in waves, as follows:
  • 1st Wave: April 1
    New Freshmen who apply before March 15, and who don't select a Special Interest Community preference, will receive an assignment by April 1.
  • 2nd Wave: May 1
    New Freshmen who apply or de-assign* before April 15, and who don't select a Special Interest Community preference, will receive an assignment by May 1.
  • 3rd Wave: May 15
    New Freshmen who apply or de-assign before May 1, will receive an assignment by May 15.
  • Final Wave: July 6
    New Freshmen who apply or de-assign before June 30, will receive an assignment by July 6.
Basically, any UNCG student who does not live on campus in Spring 2020, but who is not a new freshman, falls in this category. Upperclass Non-Residents (SO, JR, SR, GRAD) and New Transfer Students can sign up for housing for the 2020-21 year by applying and selecting a space on campus. You will have the best chance of assigning yourself to a room (self-assigning) the earlier you complete the application and make the $200 pre-payment.


Feb. 17-May 31, 2020

2020-21 Housing Application period for Upperclass Non-Residents (SO, JR, SR, GRAD) and New Transfer Students can sign up for housing for the 2020-21 year. All who apply by May 31, 2020, will be guaranteed housing on campus.

March 10-June 30, 2020

Self-Assignment Available

Upperclass Non-Residents and New Transfer students can begin to log into Artemis and assign themselves to a room.
  • You can self-assign to any available room after March 10 and until June 30.
  • Students may request to be de-assigned from any room that they signed up for during the self-assignment process.
  • Once you have de-assigned, the room you were in will become available to all other currently unassigned students.
  • Once you have de-assigned, you will be able to go back into ARTEMIS to select a new room.
  • You will have until June 30 to self-assign. After June 30 you will be assigned by Housing Staff.


May 31, 2020

Returner Application closes

Summer 2020

Housing Application Deadlines
  • For students currently living in Lexington, McCormick or Lofts on Lee, or students who will be living in Lexington and McCormick Residence Hall in Fall 2020: We will make every effort to keep you/get you into your assigned room to minimize the number of moves you must make. To do this, you will need to apply for Summer Housing by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2020.
  • For all other students: To guarantee summer housing you will need to complete a housing application by 4 p.m. on April 24, 2020. Students who cancel their summer housing after May 1, 2020, will be charged a $200 cancellation charge. You may cancel your Summer Housing in Artemis.
  • For students who complete the summer application by April 24, an email will be sent on April 30 with detailed information about check-in and picking up their key.
  • Please note: Any students who apply for Summer Session Housing after April 24, 2020, will be housed on a space-available basis only.
  • Students registered for UNCG Summer School will be housed in Lexington and McCormick Residence Halls in Spartan Village, or Lofts on Lee (ONLY available to current Spring 2020 Lofts on Lee residents).
  • Summer School housing is $897.00 per session and $1794.00 for both sessions. Housing charges will be placed on your UNCG Student Account similar to how they were for the 2019-2020 Academic Year. Students pay housing, meal and tuition/fees to the UNCG Cashier's Office.
  • Current UNCG students who are not attending summer school may stay in Lexington and McCormick Residence Halls by paying Housing and Residence Life directly. After you have completed the application in Artemis, you will log back into Artemis and click on the "Summer Housing" button again to make your payment by debit/credit card. The summer payment will go live at noon on Monday, March 16, 2020.
    1. The payment for one summer session term is $897.00 is due by April 24, 2020.
    2. The payment for the second summer session term is $897.00 will be due by June 1, 2020.
    3. If you are signing up for both terms you can pay all on May 1 or pay for individual sessions on May 1 and June 1, respectively.
    4. Payment can also be made by check or money order at Housing and Residence Life.
  • Summer Session I Check In will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 12.
  • Summer Session I Check Out must be completed by noon on Thursday, June 20.
  • Summer Session II Check In will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19.
  • Summer Session II Check Out must be completed by noon on July 26.
  • Housing & Residence Life is in Jefferson Suites Residence Hall, 1501 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro, NC 27412, opposite Bojangles and facing Spring Garden St.
Important Notes:
  • Check-in for Summer 2020 is in the Office of Housing and Residence Life in Ragsdale/Mendenhall, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Due to summer construction projects, students in Weil/Winfield will pick up their keys in Weil/Winfield on Sunday, May 12, and must complete their move to Lee Hall by 8 a.m. on Monday, May 13.
  • All other students will stay in their current Spring 2019 until Tuesday, May 14. On May 14 at 9 a.m., they can pick up their summer 2019 key for first summer session check in. The Spring 2019 key must be returned by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14.
  • ONLY Students living on campus for Fall 2019 who require housing between the end of Summer Session II (July 26) and the beginning of Fall 2019 Semester (August 14) may sign up for a interim housing contract of $500 for the 19-day period between terms. The $500 Break Housing Charge will be placed on the account in September.

Spring 2020

All students newly assigned for the Spring 2020 Semester will check in and receive their room key at the temporary Housing and Residence Life location in Jefferson Suites (across from Bojangles). There is metered parking right outside Jefferson Suites for short term pick up of the key.

Students will need to have their UNCG SpartanCard for check in and access to their assigned building. If you do not already have a UNCG Spartan card, please stop by the SpartanCard Office in Moran Commons to get your Spartancard.
Students returning to traditional or suite halls for the Spring 2020 Semester will regain access to their buildings beginning at 8 a.m. on Thurs., Jan. 9, 2020. Students in the apartments (Lofts on Lee, Spartan Village, Spring Garden Apartments, and Tower Village) will have access to their hall throughout the winter break.
You can view your assignment and roommate information by logging into Artemis.
Students may choose to move in on January 7-8, 2020.

Early Arrivals

The "Spring 2020 Early Arrival Request” form located in ARTEMIS will start recording requests for Spring 2020 Early Arrivals on December 1, 2019. Early check-in will only occur on:

  • Tuesday, January 7, for an additional $50
  • Wednesday, January 8, for an additional $50
  • Early Arrival Charges will be placed on the student account after February 1.

Early arrivals must come to the temporary Office of Housing and Residence Life in Jefferson Suites from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. to check in and receive keys. There will be no check in on the weekend.
Meal Plan Changes and Information
As part of the housing application, you will select from meal plan choices that are personalized just for you, based on the number of completed credit hours, by housing selection, etc. UNCG's meal plan and flex plan rates for residents are listed HERE.

Making Changes to Meal Plans for Spring 2020 Begins November 19

Students will now be able to make changes to their meal plans via their UNCGenie accounts. Here's how:
  • Go to UNCGenie
  • Click on "Personal Information"
  • Click on "Add/Change Fall/Spring Meal Plan" (scroll down to find it)
  • Follow the instructions to make a change
  • The Deadline to change your meal plan for Spring 2020 is 4 p.m. on Friday, January 17.
