Known as the Gate City, Greensboro is located in an ideal location to explore all the Southeast has to offer. Greensboro is just a short drive from the mountains of western North Carolina, the beaches of eastern North Carolina and larger cities such as Charlotte and Raleigh. Greensboro is also the halfway point between Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC and is linked to both via the interstate system, train, and direct airline flights. Our closest airport is the Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) which is about 15 minutes from campus, but we are about one hour away from both Charlotte and Raleigh Airports.

Greensboro boasts a vibrant downtown, many parks and neighborhoods full of trees and bike paths, and a high concentration of higher education institutions lending to an educated populace and progressive environment.

Whether you enjoy the outdoors or the arts, the city of Greensboro has something to offer for everyone. Perhaps you want to go kayaking on Lake Brandt and then grab dinner at The Iron Hen. On a rainy day, maybe you go watch a play at the Triad Stage or the Tanger Center and then get dessert at Cheesecakes by Alex. Regardless of what your interests are, Greensboro can help you pursue them further. To learn more about Greensboro, you can visit our city website.

Get Involved in Greensboro

Greensboro has a rich and diverse history and is most famous for being the starting point of the sit-in movement often regarded as the start of the civil rights movement. Today, the original site of the sit-ins is preserved as the Smithsonian’s International Civil Rights Museum.

If you are looking for a lunch or dinner partner, generally you never have to look too far as we love to engage in conversation over a meal in HRL! Our staff members keep a running list of the best places to eat around town and are always happy to share the information and most of the time join if you invite them. Due to the location and size of our city there are a lot of events that come to the area for people to enjoy and try. If you are more interested in spending time on-campus or with your peers, they are often having viewing parties for sporting events, movie nights, or game nights. Opt in or opt out as you like, but we are proud to have a diverse group of CRLs who have various interests and welcome others to join them.

Involvement and recreation opportunities in Greensboro are extensive as are shopping opportunities including the Friendly Center and Four Seasons Center. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Greensboro Watershed Trails offer 42 miles of natural surface trails and the Greensboro Arboretum showcases the region’s biodiversity. Volunteer opportunities are numerous, particularly popular with our staff is the Guilford County Animal Shelter.
