We know that many students and their families are still feeling the effects of the pandemic both emotionally and financially and we hope that this grant will help ease the burden that many students are carrying into this new academic year.

Whether you are a first-time new or transfer student, a current resident on campus, or an enrolled student who currently doesn’t live on campus now, the following applies:

If you already applied for housing and made your pre-payment:

This grant will be applied automatically. You do not need to take any further action. The grant will be dispersed to all students registered and living on campus on August 30. If you have a balance on your account, it will be applied to that balance. If you do not owe anything, you will receive a refund.

Refunds generated by the grant will be dispersed to direct deposit accounts by September 3. Students can receive their refund via direct deposit or through a mailed paper check. Refund checks cannot be picked up in the Cashiers and Student Accounts Office. The fastest and most secure way to receive a refund is direct deposit.

Frequently Asked Questions

This $1,500 grant will be awarded in the Fall ’21 semester ONLY for the 2021-22 academic year. It covers a significant portion of housing costs, and we encourage you to take advantage of it.
The grant will be placed on your student account immediately prior to when your Fall 2021 bill is sent to you in the first week of July. This will lower the amount that you need to pay by the end of July/first of August.
The grant is applied to the charges on your account. If you pay more than what is owed, then yes, you get a refund.
The money will be returned to the University. You must live on campus to keep the grant money.
No. The grant is for students living in UNCG residence halls.
No action is needed as long as you have a completed housing application (including the $200 prepayment) for the 2021 - 2022 academic year.
At this time, our understanding is that the grant money does not impact other money sources. We do not expect the grant to affect other financial awards.
International students are not eligible. In some cases, non-citizen permanent residents may be eligible. Students should check with Financial Aid.
No. The grant will be applied in full towards the fall semester charges.
The housing rates will remain unchanged for spring 2022. The amount you owe will be more than it is for the fall since the one-time $1500 payment will be applied in the fall.
No. The $200 prepayment is separate, is required to complete a housing application, and is applied to your spring 2022 charges. The Housing Grant will be applied to your fall 2021 charges.
To the best of our knowledge, the grant is not taxable.
Send an email to HRL (hrl@uncg.edu) with your name and ID number. Indicate you wish to have your application reactivated. Once that process is complete, you will be able to log in and self-assign.
No. The grant is for students living on campus housing in the fall 2021 semester.
This grant will not affect your current financial aid or be used to calculate your FAFSA in the future.

Please note:
UNCG is funding these grants with the institutional portion of federal funds intended for coronavirus response and relief in higher education. Per U.S. Department of Education guidelines, students who are ineligible for other forms of federal support, including international students and students who are undocumented or who hold DACA status, also are ineligible to receive these housing grants.

By submitting your housing application, you acknowledge your consent to receive these funds for the purpose of applying them to your costs related to campus housing. If you choose to opt-out of accepting this grant, you must do so by contacting the Office of Housing and Residence Life at 336-334-5636 or hrl@uncg.edu. Please be advised that this is a one-time housing grant and opting-out does not entitle you to receive these funds for other purposes.
